We all know and understand that our metabolism is increased by movement, mostly in the form of exercise.

The chemistry of these human bodies is positively affected by activity of the muscles. And that’s why we are becoming exercise addicts. However, this is good because it is important for the body to burn fatty acids as well as other acids, which happens when we exercise. And this is one way we maintain a healthy body.

Now, we can overdo it with too much or too intense activity and that can cause a build-up of lactic acid and other acids in the muscles. How many of us have experienced sore muscles after of day of intensive exercise? It’s because of this acid build up in our muscles.

It is suggested to take a day off between heavier workouts. This gives the muscles a chance to clear out the acid to avoid the negative effects of a workout that’s very intense. Another cure for this soreness is to drink an alkalinizing powder drink on a daily basis.

It’s a strange looking gizmo. It sort of looks like a small cannonball with a round handle protruding out of the top. I’ve never seen the “kettlebell” before, have you?

Well, it may be new to me, and some of you, but it’s not new. It’s actually very old…dating all the way back to the 18th century when Russians consistently used kettlebells for training their military.

Now it has emerged as one of the hottest new training devises. Its tough, uncompromising and apparently working out with the kettlebell brings miraculous results.

Hollywood celebrities love them and it’s not just the macho types like Sylvester Stallone that are making them the trendiest new fitness tool. Gym bunnies are also waking up to the benefits of kettlebells. Football and other sports leagues are using the kettlebells to train their top athletes while physiotherapists use them regularly in rehabilitation.

“On the face of it, the kettlebell isn’t terribly impressive. So, what’s the difference between swinging a kettlebell around and hefting barbells or free weights?
“Unlike a dumbbell or barbell, the kettlebell’s center of mass is offset from the handle,” explains trainer Jamie Lloyd. “This means the weight constantly pulls against your hand and requires not only strength and co-ordination, but also the use of the other muscles through your arms, shoulders and your core stabilizer muscles. You use around 600 muscles in a workout and exercise your cardiovascular system, too – it’s definitely a total body workout.” “

“And you don’t have to be super strong to train with kettlebells. They come in different sizes and weights, starting at 4kg and going right up to a muscle crunching 48kg. Unlike standard weights, which are lifted carefully and slowly, kettlebells are flung around with seemingly gay abandon. You swing them, pump them and pass them from hand to hand. It’s a monster workout and some trainers reckon an hour of kettlebells will shed a mammoth 1,500 calories (compared with 300-400 for normal weightlifting or an aerobics class).

“A kettlebell class will supercharge your fitness and melt your unwanted fat,” enthuses Lloyd. “You’ll bust your belly fat, lose your love handles and feel fantastic, energized and strong. Keep it up for 30 days and you can drop a dress size.”

“Inevitably, there are some risks involved with kettlebells, as there are with any free weights. But Lloyd insists these can be minimized by having proper instruction. Once you’ve learned good technique, though, he points out that the training can actually help prevent injuries. “Learning to move and lift properly carries over into daily life.”

However, Ken Liu, personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist, is cautious of over hyping the kettlebell. “Don’t get me wrong, I love kettlebells but they won’t replace barbells or a multitude of other forms of training,” he warns. “They should only be part of your training regime.” “

If any of you suffer from arthritis, like I do, and I believe you do because many, many people have arthritis; I have found a helpful piece of advice is to exercise. It’s no cure, but it sure can help subside the pain and I hear it even helps fight off the deterioration in our joints from this painful disease.

The relief that can come from even a little bit of exercise (15 minutes) is temporary, but it definitely has helped to curb the constant pain that I have if I don’t do at least some exercise on a daily basis. If I can exercise for longer periods of time some days it’s great, and I do it. But, I can tell the difference even with just 15 minutes. I just go with what I can do depending on where the pain is that day and what it will allow me to do.

On the other side, some days I just don’t have it in me to exercise at all. But, I always go back to it as soon as I can the next day doing what I can. For me, exercise seems to increase my ability to move my joints and use my muscles. I have found that having no exercise can make me stiff and it can be soooo painful at times. I’ve learned my lesson.

I’ve read that exercising for arthritis patients is beneficial in several ways. When the arthritis flares up, with exercise the elasticity in the joints and muscles is not so compromised and you have more motion as I expressed before. The pain also lessens in my experience.

I hope these guidelines I found on The Diet Channel.com will help:

Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when putting together an exercise routine:

·	Warm up extensively. Your warm-up should be longer than usual to get the blood flowing through your joints. This will help improve your range of motion and flexibility for the main workout.

·	Exercise in moderation. You can do a total body workout, as long as you focus on proper form for the exercises chosen. You should perform each repetition at a slow controlled pace. The intensity should be moderate or 40-60% of your maximum weight (the heaviest weight you could possibly do), and you should go for high repetitions, 10-20 repetitions. The exercises should be performed at a full range of motion, to improve joint flexibility and loosening up of the joints.

·	Stretch to improve your flexibility. You should make sure that you stretch to improve your range of motion, which will keep the stress off of the joints.

·	Water workouts are a great option. If you have the ability to do cardiovascular or strength training work in a pool, then take advantage of it. The warm water will help decrease stiffness and relax your muscles, while the buoyancy will take the pressure off of your joints, as you work out in an almost pain free environment.

·	Word of caution. Use the two-hour pain rule as a guide. If you experience excess joint pain or greater-than-normal pain two hours after you have exercised, then you have over-done it and you will want to modify your workout next time. You will do this either by decreasing the exercises done, adjusting the intensity, or choosing different exercises.
