A friend of mine sent this to me by email and I thought it was well worth posting for everyone to read. This seems to be the most effective way to exercise.

You warm up by relaxed pedaling for three minutes and then increase the intensity and pedal and as hard and fast as you can for 30 seconds . You simply have to push it very hard, to your maximum level of exertion.

If you are able to pedal at the high intensity for another 5 or 10 seconds than you did not pedal hard or fast enough, and you need to increase the intensity and/or speed.

After your 30-second workout, you pedal at a comfortable, relaxed pace for 90 seconds to recover, then you repeat this 7 times for a total of 8 cycles. If you are doing it correctly you will be sweating profusely, and it just might be one of the best workouts of your life.

The beauty of this approach is that it only requires you to exercise intensely for FOUR minutes and takes only 20 minutes of your time. If you do it properly I can assure you that it will improve your health far more than HOURS of regular cardio.

If you’re obese, and can drink over a half quart of juice a day, go for the Mangosteen! It contains some potent anti-inflammatory properties that could actually help prevent heart disease and diabetes even though you’re over-weight.
How can this be, you ask? Well, the juice of this exotic ‘superfruit’ lowered levels of C-reactive protein in a study performed in California.

“Dr. Jay Udani, M.D. from Medicus Research, California, worked with a team of researchers to carry out a randomized, double-blind placebo controlled trial. He said, “For people drinking over half a liter of mangosteen juice a day, the degree of reduction in CRP levels was statistically significant – a reduction of 1.33mg/L compared to an increase of 0.9mg/L in the placebo group”. “

Inflammation, has been found to be a predictor of cardiovascular disease and a precursor of metabolic syndrome. Reducing this inflammation in obese people is the goal for its treatment. Natural treatments are almost always the preferred way to treat our human physical problems. The other alternative methods may carry the risk of side effects. When tested, Mangosreen juice was found to be safe at all dosage levels…no side effects were evident.

So drink to your heart’s content! (No pun intended!) Find more at: www.NewsRx.com

A new diet pill using a flavonoid found in grapefruit could be the next break-through hope for the over weight and obese patient.

The chemical compound, Naringenin is this flavonoid found in citrus fruit. Even though Naringenin is what gives that bitter taste to grapefruit, it’s value to the weight loss world is in the fact that it is effective to making the liver burn fat that we’ve eaten instead of storing it. And that is the good news for all of us trying to lose weight. This Naringenin could be used to develop a more natural diet pill without the side effects of the diet pills on the market today! Now, that is good news!

We’ve all been aware that eating grapefruit is recommended as a good way to control weight but this carries it lots further! Just think, maybe a dose of naringenin could not only prevent us from gaining weight but, even help us to lose weight by burning the fat that we eat.

The researchers are testing this compound now and they seem to believe it would not only help obesity sufferers, but it’s been proven to even fight diabetes because they found the process also helped balance insulin and glucose levels.
But, before you go out and buy tons of grapefruit at the grocery store, the tests show for this to work, far greater doses of naringenin is needed than what you can get just by eating grapefruit.

So far, tests on mice have proven that naringenin prevented the mice from suffering obesity, developing the metabolic syndrome that causes their cholesterol to rise and those given naringenin were prevented from their bodies becoming resistant to insulin.

The researchers are now trying to develop this compound into a drug which would be both effective and safe for humans to take as a supplement or treatment for obesity.

Most of us want to know…what is it that causes belly fat, technically called, “visceral fat” to accumulate? Our biggest health care concern is that having a fat belly has been proven to be a significant risk factor for heart and cardiovascular disease. We’ve been taught that getting a fat belly for the most part only occurs in middle-aged women, after having gone through menopause.

True, but, is this totally the correct thinking or is there more to this and we have it wrong? You’re correct, this is false teaching. According to researchers at Rush University Medical Center, it is the actual change in hormone balance that occurs during the menopause stage that is the culprit.

“Of all the factors we analyzed that could possibly account for the increase in visceral fat during this period in a woman’s lifetime, levels of active testosterone proved to be the one most closely linked with abdominal fat,” said Imke Janssen, PhD, assistant professor of preventive medicine.

A rise in metabolic syndrome corresponding with a rise in testosterone activity was found in a study of women for six years before and after their last menstrual period.

These findings may surprise some of us because the results showed a woman’s age did not significantly correlate with the amount of visceral fat she had. Race or other cardiovascular risk factors didn’t make a significant difference either. However, what the studies did show was that the level of active testosterone (“bioavailable” testosterone) in the body was the strongest predictor of visceral fat.

This belly or visceral fat surrounds our internal organs around the waistline and is a source of inflammation that contributes to premature atherosclerosis and risk of acute coronary syndrome. On the other hand, subcutaneous fat is located beneath the skin and does not metabolically process same way as visceral fat.

“For many years, it was thought that estrogen protected premenopausal women against cardiovascular disease and that the increased cardiovascular risk after menopause was related only to the loss of estrogen’s protective effect,” said Janssen. “But our studies suggest that in women, it is the change in the hormonal balance – specifically, the increase in active testosterone – that is predominantly responsible for visceral fat, and for the increased risk of cardiovascular disease.”

Do you realize that our ankle can be the source of determining whether or not we have peripheral artery disease? Hard to believe, but true.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill have discovered that by measuring the blood flow through the ankle of a patient it can help to determine if a patient has already had a stroke or transient ischmic attack, and if they are at risk of having another heart attack that could be fatal. It is just a quick 15-minute test called an ankle brachial index, which is similar to having your blood pressure checked.

People with peripheral artery disease or those that have previously had a stroke are at greater risk of suffering another stroke, transient attack or heart attack that could be fatal.

The device, similar to a blood pressure cuff, is placed around the ankle of the patient to measure their blood flow. Then the results are compared with the blood flow in the patient’s arm. If the blood flow is reduced, it is considered to be an indicator of peripheral artery disease. Without outward symptoms, a patient can be helped to avoid a fatal attack in the future.

Want to protect your arteries? Eat broccoli. It’s one of the healthy superfoods that is packed with nutrition that works to protect our vascular system and thus helps to protect us from angina, and eventually a stroke or heart attack.

Broccoli contains natural chemicals that may aid in preventing the veins from building up blockages in the linings so that the blood flow is not impeded.

The big question…”Can eating vegetables really protect us against heart disease?”

Vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower contain a chemical that can promote “a natural defense mechanism” to protect against clogging damage to the artery linings.

A chemical, known as Sulforaphane, which is a natural element in these vegetables has shown scientist that it can effectively stimulate the protein needed to give us this protective operative.

“Sulforaphane is found naturally in broccoli, so our next steps include testing whether simply eating broccoli, or other vegetables in their ‘family’, has the same protective effect.

“We also need to see if the compound can reduce the progression of disease in affected arteries.” Said Dr Paul Evans, from the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, who led the research team.

Also, Prof Peter Weissberg, Medical Director at the BHF, (the institution that funded the research), said: “These fascinating findings provide a possible mechanism by which eating vegetables protects against heart disease.

“As well as adding evidence to support the importance of eating ‘five-a-day’, the biochemistry revealed in this research could lead to more targeted dietary or medical approaches to prevent or lessen disease that leads to heart attacks and strokes.”

Recent studies are finding that eating eggs don’t raise blood cholesterol at all and that we could eat as many as we liked. The study above shows that cooked eggs are actually beneficial to our hearts. And, while all cooked eggs had benefits, fried eggs were the best!

The presence of several tripeptides from in vitro simulated gastrointestinal egg digest indicates that these peptides may be absorbed into the body and exert an in vivo antihypertensive activity, although in vivo study is needed to confirm this assumption.

In our study results showed that in vitro digestion of cooked eggs could generate a number of potent ACE inhibitory peptides which may have implications for cardiovascular disease prevention, including hypertension.

Normally heart cells suffer damage after a heart attack. However, in a study in rats, it has been discovered that a naturally occurring protein, NGF, (nerve growth factor), can protect against heart cell damage following a heart attack.

Before this, NGF was thought to act only on nerve cells in the body, but mounting evidence suggests it acts on heart muscle cells too. The study had such promising results that the scientists are hopeful the treatment will help humans as well.

Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the USA and UK.

“Heart attacks happen when one of the coronary arteries carrying oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle is blocked.

If the blood supply is cut off, a part of the heart muscle dies. And this can lead to complications such as heart failure.

Drugs are already available to help prevent and minimise the damage caused by a heart attack.

These include aspirin, which works by thinning the blood to improve blood flow, and clot-busting drugs called thrombolytics to dissolve clots in the artery.

Dr Costanza Emanueli and her colleagues found that injecting the gene for NGF into the hearts of rats having a heart attack stopped heart cells dying off.

Dr Emanueli said: “This is the first time that a pro-survival effect of NGF in the heart has been found.

“Some other growth factors are already used clinically to treat different diseases, and our study shows that NGF may be a novel way of protecting the heart from further damage following a heart attack.”

Professor Jeremy Pearson of the British Heart Foundation, which provided funding for the work, said: “Dr Emanueli’s research opens up the exciting and unexpected possibility of helping to repair damaged hearts by using a natural factor previously only thought to help nerves grow.” ”

Otherwise you may be a “high-risk patient – with a heart attack just waiting to happen.

Loosing your excess weight can greatly reduce your chances of getting a heart attack and even change your need for any medications.

“As a heart doctor, I go to great lengths to explain to my patients why they need to lose weight and exercise, and I try to tell them how.

But, the simple and more practical tips they pass on to me about how they jump-started their healthy-heart campaign often impress me. Enlisting a pooch that demands that you go for a walk three times a day is one of the better ones I’ve heard.”
