It has been shown to inhibit prostate cancer from growing any further
and has actually had an effect on preventing prostate cancer.

Studies in lab mice have revealed that it has the ability to prevent the spreading of breast cancer to the lungs.

Continual studies are showing that Turmeric has positive effects on multiple myeloma.

Studies also are showing it has had positive effects on pancreatic cancer.

May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to self- destruct.

Not only can it reduce the side effects of the chemo drug paclitaxel, but it also helps to increase its ability to work more efficiently.

Researchers believe that Turmeric actually can reduce the risk of childhood leukemia.

Turmeric has been found to naturally inhibit the cox-2 cancer

May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.

Has even been known to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.

It’s supposed to be a hearty, spicy vegetable delight. And people who thought they’d never like tofu, are in for a big surprise!

Roasted Eggplant with Tofu and Basil

1 lb. Japanese eggplants (about 4)
2 Tbs. Thai Kitchen Premium Fish Sauce
1 Tbs. brown sugar
1 Tbs. fresh lime juice
2 tsp. Thai Kitchen Spicy Thai Chili Sauce
1 Tbs. vegetable oil
1 Tbs. garlic, minced
2 small shallots, thinly sliced
8 oz. firm tofu, strained and cubed
1⁄4 cup basil leaves, thinly sliced

Place eggplants on a lightly oiled baking sheet and broil 3” to 4” from heat until skin chars and blisters, rotating frequently, about 10 minutes. Let cool, then peel and slice diagonally 1⁄4” thick. Combine fish sauce, brown sugar, lime juice and spicy Thai chili sauce; blend well. Heat oil in a wok or heavy skillet on medium-high. Add garlic and shallots and stir-fry until golden brown. Add eggplant and sauce mixture and cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Gently stir in tofu and basil; remove from heat, cover, and let stand 5 minutes to blend flavors. Makes 3 to 4 servings.

There are so many claims to the healing powers and other virtues of Turmeric that I thought I would just give a list of what I’ve read other users are saying.

I can’t tell you if all these are real, but many have attributed Turmeric for their healing experience.

It’s completely natural and certainly couldn’t hurt to try it. Some say in order to get the most benefit out of Turmeric we should take it with milk, whereas others are saying using it with oil and pepper is a potent mixture. And in some cases we need to use just the pure powder form to get the results we are looking for.

So, I’ll leave it up to you to try Turmeric for yourselves. Let us know how it has or has not helped you.

Multiple problems affecting our human bodies are treatable with Turmeric:

Its natural anti-inflammatory properties work as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.

It can be used to naturally detox our liver.

Has been used as a natural painkiller.

Good news also is that it may help in weight management by aiding fat to metabolize.

The Chinese use it as a medicine to treat depression.

Has been known to have power to heal bad sinus infections when nothing else previously seemed to work

Seems to be effective to heal colds and sore throats by consuming a hot drink made with Turmeric, milk and black powder.

Other benefits of Turmeric coming in tomorrow’s Blog

There is a tiny little dark purple berry called the Maqui berry found deep in the jungles of the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina where the climate is harsh and not many can survive there.

This region of Patagonia has the reputation of being one of the cleanest places on earth. Here these forests protect the Maqui berries from diseases, sun irradiation, and biological enemies, which makes the conditions ideal for growing.

The local Mapuche Indians have been using this powerful little fruit for centuries for its many medicinal purposes and only recently has the rest of the world discovered the Maqui berry. After much research, these berries are found it to be jammed packed with incredibly powerful benefits to the human body. They are now reputed to contain the most potent combination of nutrients that the world has ever seen.

You don’t hear about the Maqui berry like you hear about the acai berry, but that is sure to change because the level of anthocyanins and polyphenols antioxidants is so high in the Maqui they out stage the other berries and can do amazing things for your health.

The Mapuche Indians have revered this little fruit for its virtues of giving strength, health and vitality. They believe it to have mystical healing powers and use it as a staple in their diet believing it to support stamina, increase strength, and promote a healthy immune system. These Indian tribes are known to consistently have one of the longest life spans of any ethnic group alive on the earth today. There’s got to be something to this tiny purple beauty.

2-3 tablespoons unsweetened, plain soymilk
3 tablespoons vegan margarine (Earth Balance)
1-2 teaspoons white or chickpea miso paste
freshly ground black pepper

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 325F.
2. Steam cauliflower for 10-12 minutes, until fork tender.
3. Lightly oil a 9 inch baking dish and set aside.
4. Transfer steamed cauliflower to a food processor or blender.
5. Add soymilk, margarine, miso and pepper and puree until smooth.
6. Pour into prepared baking dish and bake, uncovered, about 6-8 minutes, until slightly bubbling. Sprinkle chives and fold in, serve hot.

Comments:
You can add blended white beans for extra substance and if you have a stick blender, just blend the whole thing in the pot and save on the washing up!

Calcium and Magnesium are both minerals that are alkaline and are important contributions to keeping our systems well balanced.

Also Alkalinizing Powders specially formulated to maintain pH balance and can be a real help if you tend to consume too few fruits and vegetables. These powders are made from whole foods and herbs that encourage the body to release acid salts and heavy metals, and they are usually lightly flavored with vanilla so they can be mixed with pure neutral water.

Many green supplements are offered out there on the market that are highly alkaline and really do a great job at maintaining the pH balance. These are especially helpful if you are unable to eat leafy greens like spinach and romaine every day.

Aging: It’s All In Your Mind

Like most animal lovers, I learn a lot from my dogs. (Don’t stop reading if you’re not a dog lover- I promise this will apply to you as well!)

A couple of years ago Emily- a 6 month old pit bull- left the Bark Avenue Rescue Facility in Los Angeles and joined my family, which at the time consisted of me and Woodstock, a 12 year old male pit-lab mix.

Immediately something interesting happened.

Woodstock- who was at the time, to put it diplomatically, a senior citizen- got a new lease on life. He started running again, like he used to do when he was a puppy. Emily got him to chase her everywhere. They played constantly. Woodstock spent less and less time sleepily contemplating life, and more and more time actively involved in it.

He literally got younger.

I was thinking about this recently while reading Ellen Langer’s brilliant book “Counter Clockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility”.

Langer you may know from the Oprah show—she authored the classic book, “Mindfulness”– but she’s a Harvard psychologist with a stunning resume in social research that goes back thirty years. In one study she took a group of really decrepit elderly men in their late 80’s from their assisted living home, packed them all up and took them to a cabin in the woods for the week. The catch was that the cabin was engineered to be a “time capsule”. All the furniture was from the 1950’s. Posters on the wall were from the 1950’s. There was a small black and white television, rigged to play only shows like “Sgt. Bilko” and “The Ed Sullivan Show”. A 1957 Ford was parked outside. They met daily to discuss “current events” like the launch of the first U.S. satellite, Explorer 1 and the need for bomb shelters, and Castro’s advance into Havana. “Best-selling” titles like “Exodus” and “Goodbye Columbus” lined the bookshelves, Nat “King” Cole played on the “radio”.

By the end of the week, an amazing thing had happened.

These men- most of whom couldn’t carry their bags to their rooms at the start of the study- were able to carry them back to the van at the end of the week. Their blood pressure had lowered. Their posture was more erect. Their measured grip strength had improved, as had joint flexibility and manual dexterity. Their hearing and memory showed significant gains. Even their finger length increased- their arthritis diminished and they were able to straighten their fingers more.

Absolutely amazing.

“The study shaped not only my view of aging but also my view of limits in a more general way for the next few decades”, writes Langer. “Over time I have come to believe less and less that biology is destiny. It is not primarily our physical selves that limit us but rather our mindset about our physical limits”.

“Now I accept none of the medical wisdom regarding the courses our diseases must take as necessarily true”.

What we surround ourselves with deeply influences how we function, what we believe about ourselves, and what we become. Studies have shown that even obesity is “contagious” in the sense that we are more likely to be obese if we have many obese friends. Our expectations of ourselves- and the expectations of those around us- influence us far more deeply than we appreciate. What we believe about our health has a powerful influence not only on how we feel, but also on objective measures of well-being and vitality.

As they say in the motivational speaking world, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time around”.

Woodstock became “younger” when he interacted with 6-month old Emily, who expected him to behave like other puppies and had no concept of him as a “limited” older citizen. The men in Langer’s study behaved as if they were in the 1950’s when they “expected” more of themselves and believed they could deliver.

So what’s the message?

Maybe it’s this: Definitions are fluid. How we think about our health and what we think is possible actually makes a difference in what is possible. What- and who- we surround ourselves with really makes a difference. And if we allow ourselves to be defined by narrow and confining images of who and what we limit- rather than expand- possibility.

No wonder Langer calls her work “the psychology of possibility”.

In 1954, something that had never been done before in the history of humans was achieved when Roger Bannister ran a mile in just under 4 minutes, a feat that had been believed to be unreachable and physiologically impossible. A mere month and a half later Bannister’s record was broken, and now the 4-minute mile is the standard of all professional middle distance runners. In the last 50 years, the record has been lowered by 50 seconds.

If you can see it- as every athlete after Bannister did— you’ll believe it’s possible.

If you believe it’s possible- you just might be able to do it.

In what area of your health- or life- have self-imposed barriers, or restricting definitions- limited you?

More important- are those limits real? Or did you make them up?

Because if you made those limits up- even if you had widespread agreement about them, like the men in Langer’s study who everyone agreed were “disabled”- then maybe it’s time to come up some new, more empowering possibilities.

After all, we’re the ones who write our self-definitions.

We’re the ones who can rewrite them.

The possibilities are limitless.

The presence of significant coronary artery disease (S-CAD) is now being able to be detected by testing a patient’s cardiac respiratory stress response (RSR).

These tests have been found not only to be quick but very accurate.
The findings showed patients with S-CAD had a significantly lower cardiac respiratory stress response compared to patients without. These results suggest that RSR is a strong indicator for the disease.

“To determine cardiac respiratory stress response (RSR), Washington Hospital Center researchers used a new innovative respiratory stress test. The test uses a Pulse Oximeter (PPG) to measure blood flow in the finger in response to paced breathing over a 90 second time period. The PPG data are immediately captured and analyzed using a proprietary algorithm that determines the RSR. All findings were confirmed using Quantitative Coronary Angiography (QCA). In comparison to QCA, the test results were highly accurate, with a sensitivity and specificity of 86% and 81%, respectively. No adverse events were reported.”

“It is always challenging to detect significant coronary artery disease in patients at the physician’s office and often required a physical stress test, including nuclear imaging and often cardiac catheterization” said lead investigator Ron Waksman, MD, Associate Director, Division of Cardiology, Washington Hospital Center and professor of medicine (cardiology) at Georgetown University in Washington DC. “The RSR test is simple and fast to perform in a doctor’s office without the need for significant expense and hardship to the patient, and the results of the study support its accuracy to detect significant coronary artery disease. We believe it could be a useful diagnostic option.”

We all know and understand that our metabolism is increased by movement, mostly in the form of exercise.

The chemistry of these human bodies is positively affected by activity of the muscles. And that’s why we are becoming exercise addicts. However, this is good because it is important for the body to burn fatty acids as well as other acids, which happens when we exercise. And this is one way we maintain a healthy body.

Now, we can overdo it with too much or too intense activity and that can cause a build-up of lactic acid and other acids in the muscles. How many of us have experienced sore muscles after of day of intensive exercise? It’s because of this acid build up in our muscles.

It is suggested to take a day off between heavier workouts. This gives the muscles a chance to clear out the acid to avoid the negative effects of a workout that’s very intense. Another cure for this soreness is to drink an alkalinizing powder drink on a daily basis.

Ingredients for the dressing:

½ tsp grainy mustard
1 tsp runny honey
2½ tsp cider vinegar
4 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
½ globe preserved ginger, very finely chopped
1 tsp syrup from ginger jar
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 small red chilli (not bird’s eye), halved, deseeded and finely shredded
10 medium-sized radishes, well washed
1 bulb fennel
juice of 1 lemon
½ red onion
½ green-skinned apple
2-3 small beetroot
handful of mint leaves
To make the dressing, put the mustard, honey, vinegar and some seasoning into a small jug and whisk in the olive oil in a steady stream. Add the remaining ingredients.

Trim the top off each radish and cut off the little tail. Slice very finely, lengthways, so that you have teardrop-shaped slices and put them in a bowl. Halve and quarter the fennel and trim off the tops (keeping any frondy bits). Remove the central core from each quarter and cut the rest into wafer-thin slices, lengthways. Add to the radishes and squeeze on a bit of lemon juice to prevent discolouration. Slice the onion so finely it looks shaved. Cut the apple half in two and remove the core. Cut into matchstick-like pieces. Add these to the bowl with more lemon juice. Peel the beet and, using a sharp knife or mandolin, cut the flesh into wafer-thin slices. Add to the bowl with the mint, chopped or torn. Add any fennel fronds, pour on the vinaigrette, toss the salad and serve straightaway.
