More helpful tips for reaching your weight loss goal. Hope something here will click to help your dieting efforts and bring you success for a healthy thin body.

Always read the labels on the boxes and bottles in the grocery store. The fine print that gives the nutritional information is so important. Especially check the first four ingredients because they have the highest concentration levels. Also, be especially aware of sugar in any form such as Corn syrup, Dextrose, Fructose, Glucose, High Fructose Corn Syrup (there are several others). These should be avoided as much as possible in high amounts along with high sodium contents.

Another good way of helping you loose weight is to determine not to eat after a certain hour in the evening, like after 7 or 7:30 PM. Eating late in the evening just before going to sleep is bad because your body doesn’t exercise and burn up the calories consumed. It is as if you ate two or three times as much food because it just settles in your stomach, doesn’t get burned off and leaves you with a real bloated feeling in the morning. You’ll also find you are more hungry than you ordinarily would be had you not eaten so late the night before.

Do you tend to reach for food when your emotions start to get the best of you? You think that perhaps a candy bar or some cool ice cream will soothe your stress or emotions and bring calm into your life. Who hasn’t done this? This can be very dangerous because when you eat while emotional, your body does not have to turn off the hunger since eating out of emotions is not tied to actual hunger. Instead, become more active, or read a book, play a game, talk to a friend…train yourself not to react to your emotions by eating.

Now, this may be the craziest one of all…use blue. It is a fact that marketing research has proven. They have a track record of proof that the color blue has an effect on depressing our hunger. So, try using a blue table cloth or blue plates. You may find it will make a difference and with out realizing it you will feel less hungry.

A friend of mine sent this to me by email and I thought it was well worth posting for everyone to read. This seems to be the most effective way to exercise.

You warm up by relaxed pedaling for three minutes and then increase the intensity and pedal and as hard and fast as you can for 30 seconds . You simply have to push it very hard, to your maximum level of exertion.

If you are able to pedal at the high intensity for another 5 or 10 seconds than you did not pedal hard or fast enough, and you need to increase the intensity and/or speed.

After your 30-second workout, you pedal at a comfortable, relaxed pace for 90 seconds to recover, then you repeat this 7 times for a total of 8 cycles. If you are doing it correctly you will be sweating profusely, and it just might be one of the best workouts of your life.

The beauty of this approach is that it only requires you to exercise intensely for FOUR minutes and takes only 20 minutes of your time. If you do it properly I can assure you that it will improve your health far more than HOURS of regular cardio.

What we do to the Earth, we do to ourselves.

It is time to take a stand on plastic bags. It is time to CUT, BREAK and even STAB the plastic “bag” habit.

You have all seen the havoc plastic bags wreak on our landscape – littering the highways, the landfills and even hanging from the trees. We should eliminate plastic grocery bags from all of our grocery stores.

Here are some of the top reasons for eliminating Plastic Bags!

1.	Plastic bags get into our rivers and oceans killing marine life!
2.	Plastic bags decompose slower than paper bags leaving roads, forests and neighborhoods littered with garbage.
3.	According to a study by the EPA, plastic bags are FOUR TIMES LESS likely to be recycled over paper bags!
4.	Plastic bags hold THREE TIMES LESS than traditional paper bags.
5.	Plastic bags produce 33% MORE fossil fuels and 59% MORE greenhouse gases than paper bags.

So, grab the reusable bag the stores are offering now and get shopping!

Risotto is one of those dishes that we all love to eat, but not many of us have the patience to make it often. It takes about 20 minutes of careful watching and every few minutes adding a half cup of hot stock to the rice, as the rice slowly absorbs the liquid it’s in.

For this mushroom risotto, mushrooms are sautéed first, then cooked in cognac (or vermouth) and cream. Arborio rice is cooked slowly with stock and when done, the mushroom cream mixture is stirred in, along with some freshly grated Parmesan cheese. (Hungry yet?) I actually don’t mind watching over risotto, it’s easy enough to do, and you can prepare other things while keeping the corner of your eye on the risotto. The result is so worth the effort.

Preparation time: 40 minutes. The recipe calls for arborio rice, an Italian-grown rice that is high in starch, with grains that are shorter and fatter than any other rice. The high starch content of aborio rice yields a creamy texture when cooked, so it is traditionally used for risotto.
Ingredients
·	4 Tbsp butter
·	2 cups flavorful mushrooms such as shiitake, chanterelle, or oyster mushrooms, cleaned, trimmed, and cut into half inch to inch pieces
·	2/3 cup cognac, vermouth, or dry white wine
·	3/4 cup heavy cream
·	7 cups chicken stock* (use vegetable stock for vegetarian option)
·	1 Tbsp olive oil
·	1/3 cup of peeled and minced shallots (OR 1/3 cup of yellow or white onion, finely chopped)
·	1 3/4 cups arborio rice
·	1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
·	Salt and freshly ground black pepper
·	2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley
*If cooking gluten-free, use homemade stock or gluten-free packaged stock.

DIRECTIONS:
1 Melt 2 Tbsp butter in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and sauté about 5 minutes (if using chanterelles, dry sauté first for a minute or two and let the mushrooms cook in their own juices before adding the butter). Add cognac, bring to a boil, and reduce liquid by half, about 3-4 minutes. Lower heat to medium, add cream, and simmer 5 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and set aside.

2 Bring stock to a simmer in a saucepan.

3 In a deep, heavy, medium sized saucepan, heat oil and remaining butter on medium low. Add shallots or onions and cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Add rice and stir to coat with butter and oil. Add simmering stock, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring enough to keep the rice from sticking to the edges of the pan. Wait until the stock is almost completely absorbed before adding the next 1/2 cup. This process will take about 20 minutes. The rice should be just cooked and slightly chewy.

4 Stir in the mushroom mixture and the Parmesan cheese. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve garnished with parsley.
Serves 6

Lets say you’ve lost all the weight you needed to loose. Now there is another challenge that faces us at this point…how can we maintain our new ideal body weight?

Once again we have a quick and easy formula to give you a general idea how to go about facing this new challenge.

First of all, lets calculate how many calories you will need to consume each day to maintain your present desirable weight and not gain those ugly pounds back?

Try using the suggested calorie intake below to maintain your weight and remember calculate for the amount of calories you can consume daily by using your DESIRED BODY WEIGHT.

If you are sedentary or very obese, you shouldn’t consume any more than 10 calories per pound of desirable body weight. (If you’re obese, you’ll need to continue loosing and by consuming this amount of calories daily, it will help you get down to your desired weight)

However, if your activity level is low, or if you are over the age of 55, you may want to calculate how many total calories there are in 13 calories per pound of your desirable body weight and just eat that much per day.

On the other hand, if you regularly do moderate activity, try calculating 15 calories per pound of desirable body weight and consume that amount of calories each day.

And for those of you who regularly do strenuous activity, you can get away with consuming 18 calories per pound of your desirable body weight each day.

For a description of the meaning of the different activity levels…

Low activity means you have no planned or regular physical activity; just an occasional weekend or weekly activity (such as a leisure walk, or a fun game of golf or tennis with a friend) and this is the only type of physical activity you do.

Moderate activity means participating in physical activities such as swimming, jogging, or fast walking for 30 – 60 minutes at a time several days a week.

Strenuous activity means, on the other hand, participating in vigorous physical activity for 60 minutes or more at least 4, preferably 5 days per week.

You can’t beat shrimp for a nutritious addition to your diet. Both the wild and organically farmed raised shrimp are nutrient-rich.

And, for all you calorie conscious consumers, Shrimp is also a low calorie seafood, making it a “safe” item on your diet. Its rich in vitamin D, B-12 and selenium, a combination of nutrients rarely found in one food, especially in the American diet.

Many people don’t realize how shrimp’s low mercury levels make it safe for those who must pay attention to their exposure to mercury. The level is 1/10th of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Action Level for mercury in fish and shellfish.

There is however, one concern about shrimp that should be mentioned in the midst of all this praise. If some of you need to limit your cholesterol intake, shrimp does contain a higher cholesterol level. There are about 220 milligrams of cholesterol in four ounces of cooked shrimp. This could be an issue for some people.

All in all, however, shrimp is a very good addition to our diets.

You may consider designing your meals so that you experience them as pleasurable and relaxing (for example, eat more slowly, light some candles, and unplug the telephone). If meals are a chaotic experience and not enjoyable, you are less likely to be satiated both physically and emotionally and you will more likely want to eat again soon afterwards.

I’d also like to add one last set of observations about individuals who find they snack too frequently. It’s important to think about the pattern of your entire day in terms of enjoyment and activities. You may or may not want to make healthy snacking the solution to a daily pattern that just isn’t working for you in terms of balance and enjoyment. In some cases, planning a larger, more nourishing meal before a difficult snack period time-and then shifting activities to turn a former snack period into a period of time focused on other enjoyable pursuits-can be a more effective way of “tiding yourself over” than experimenting with your snack content.

Thanks to George Mateljan for his timely tips on snacking!
