The American Academy of Dermatology says there are significant concerns about skin cancer and lying in the sun to get a tan is NOT a safe or healthy thing to do. No matter how attractive or desirable people think it is to be tan, exposure to sun can lead to skin cancer.

“A poll was conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) in January, and included just over 7,100 men and women nationwide.

“Our survey highlighted the contradictory feelings that many people have about tanning — they like the way a tan looks but are concerned about skin cancer, which is estimated to affect about one in five Americans in their lifetime,” Dr. Zoe D. Draelos, a dermatologist and consulting professor at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C., said in a news release.

“What they may not realize is that no matter whether you tan or burn, a tan from the sun or tanning beds damages the skin and can cause wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer,” Draelos added. “The challenge is changing the long-standing attitudes about tanning to correlate with people’s knowledge about skin cancer.”

Among the findings, the survey revealed that 75 percent of the respondents said they would do anything they could to prevent skin cancer, while 80 percent said they were concerned about the disease and thought it was important to protect themselves.

But, at the same time, 72 percent said they thought people look more attractive with a tan, while 66 percent said that people look healthier when tanned. And despite skin cancer concerns, 60 percent said they believed — mistakenly, according to the AAD — that sun exposure is generally good for one’s health.

“Various reports touting the potential health benefits of sun exposure for vitamin D production are misleading people to believe that exposing oneself to UV radiation — which causes cancer — to prevent another disease is somehow beneficial,” Draelos said. “Getting vitamin D from a healthy diet, which includes naturally enriched vitamin D foods, fortified foods and beverages, and/or vitamin supplements, is a healthier alternative because it provides the exact same benefit without the skin cancer risk.”

The AAD, which has designated May as “Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month,” advises against any form of tanning activity, whether from sun exposure or tanning beds.

For more on sun exposure and skin cancer risk, visit the American Academy of Dermatology.

Here’s one more reason to avoid unhealthy weight gain.

It is suggested that obese women are at a higher risk for getting ovarian cancer than thinner women.

To make things worse, symptoms for ovarian cancer are either non existent or hard to detect which makes it difficult to catch this deadly type of cancer in its early stages.

The obese women who caught ovarian cancer were found to have never used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause. Hormone use has been linked to a reduced risk of ovarian cancer.

It has been found that obese women who’d never used HRT had a 83 percent higher risk of ovarian cancer than did women who were of normal-weight.

The journal, “Cancer”, reported these findings and they are thinking that obesity may be one of a few controllable risk factors for ovarian cancer.

“Our data suggest that maintaining a healthy weight is associated with a reduction in the risk of developing ovarian cancer,” Dr. Michael F. Leitzmann, of the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland and the University of Regensburg in GermanyLeitzmann.

“It’s not entirely clear why obesity may contribute to ovarian cancer, but it may have to do with the effects of excess body fat on a woman’s estrogen levels, according to Leitzmann and his colleagues. The fact that the risk varied according to women’s HRT use supports this theory, the researchers note.
The study also found a link between obesity at the age of 18 and a higher risk of ovarian cancer later in life — a relationship was even stronger than the one between later-life obesity and ovarian cancer risk.”

They even suggested, “It’s possible, the researchers say, that weight in adolescence or young adulthood is even more relevant to ovarian cancer than weight gain later in life.”

This is a continuation of the previous article…other aspects of the effects of being a High Powered Career Woman.

The Western man has generally preferred the slim-waisted woman throughout the centuries…that hasn’t changed in all these years. What has changed is the measurement of that waist.

Even so, just 8 per cent of females these days have the type of hourglass figure seen in the 1950s film stars. Since 1951, the average woman’s bust and hip sizes have increased by 2in, giving her figure the measurement of, bust: 39in and waist: 41in. Sounds OK until you realize waistlines have increased a massive 6.8in, meaning that women no longer goes in in the middle. Nowadays, just 20 per cent of women have a pear-shaped figure (with hips larger than their bust), whereas 46 per cent are cylindrical or straight-up-and-down.
Many of Britain’s leading infertility experts are unsurprised by the findings. At more infertility clinics they are seeing that predominantly very successful businesswomen do not have hourglass figures. “They are very slim, very
straight-up-and-down.”

This straight-up-and-down change seems to be determined by a number of different factors, and certainly one of these factors has to do with being a go-getter. “We know that if women over-exercise or diet obsessively, then their oestrogen levels drop and they become less fertile,” says Dr Martin Tovee, a psychologist at Newcastle University who has studied the influences on female body shape. “So, potentially, working hard could affect fertility too.”
Women who under-eat to stay very skinny have long been known to risk compromised fertility. “Rose Frisch, an associate professor at Harvard School of Public Health, explained how too few calories and too little body fat triggers a woman’s brain to switch off her body’s ability to reproduce by gradually restricting the flow of a hormone called leptin.”

There is a “razor-thin borderline” where a drop of just 3lb can tip a normal-sized woman into infertility without her realizing it. She may continue to menstruate, but might not ovulate during her cycle. If body-fat falls much lower, then amenorrhoea occurs when the menstrual cycle simply stops.”

“What is at issue here is not overall body weight, but its distribution,” a researcher says. “The new study suggests that these driven women with high-achieving Type A personalities have a lesser oestrogenic state, which doesn’t favor their chances of conceiving.”

“Studies show that career women can become infertile even if they don’t lose excessive weight. The very androgenic hormones that underlie the women’s professional mettle are also responsible for transferring fat from hips to waist. And the more fat that settles on her belly, the lower her level of female hormones such as oestrogen. Professor Sarah Berga of the department of gynecology and obstetrics at Emory University’s School of Medicine, has shown how stress often triggers a cascade of events that result in reduced levels of two hormones crucial for ovulation. Women with hectic jobs on top of busy lives, she says, are most at risk.

In one of her studies, Berga found that women who didn’t ovulate had excessive levels of the stress hormone cortisol present in their brain fluid, often due to trying to squeeze in too much work and exercise. “Your brain is hard to fool,” Berga says. “If you are under-eating, overworking and over-exercising, then the hypothalamus – the part of the brain that controls the release of hormones – keeps a running tally of what you are doing.”

Around 20 per cent of women who are infertile have problems with ovulation, and lifestyle factors, including anxiety and stress, are often to blame.

Berga found that talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, could reverse stress levels and boost the chances of a woman getting pregnant
“To the observer these women actually look very well pulled together,” Berga says. “Many don’t report feeling stressed and will even say that everything is just fine. But they may have unrealistic attitudes about themselves and others. Often they think that they can do more work than is realistic, and their sense of worth depends upon their achievement.”

For some help and hope:

If a woman takes her foot off the pedal, it can certainly help. Laurence says that, ultimately, her sensitivity to oestrogen is determined when her oestrogen receptors are established during puberty. You can’t change what you are given, he says, but

good nutrition, a balanced exercise plan and fewer hours spent getting stressed can pay off.

“Oestrogen makes someone relaxed, calm and thoughtful, the perfect state in which to become pregnant,” he says. “It is no biological mystery that so many studies have shown men are drawn to women who are curvaceous and have a narrow waist, indications of health and fertility.”

If you are a Tofu consumer, here’s some advice from our friends at The World’s Healthiest Foods on how to safely store Tofu to conserve it’s nutrients.

While aseptically packaged tofu need not be refrigerated until it is opened, all other forms of tofu should be refrigerated in their container. Once the packages are open, all types should be rinsed well, kept in a container covered with water, and placed in the refrigerator. Tofu will dry up and lose its texture unless it’s kept in liquid. We definitely recommend draining it daily and surrounding it with fresh filtered water. There is some nutrient loss from this soaking, but it’s not enough to stop tofu from being a good source of vitamin B1. Changing the water daily will help keep the tofu fresh for up to one week.

Tofu can also be frozen in its original packaging and will keep this way for up to five months. This process will actually alter its texture and color, making it more spongy, absorbent, and yellow. This change in physical properties is actually very suitable for certain types of recipes.

Nobody likes bad breath…do you? I don’t like to have it and I don’t like to smell it on other people! It affects your social life, your personal life and your work place.

What is bad breath anyway? Well, it’s created by oral bacteria that is, bacteria in our mouth. If that’s the case then, what we need to do is get rid of the bacteria or neutralize it at least.

And how do we do that? Well, below are some simple and obvious tips to help us get started in the right direction.

How is your dental hygiene? We need to get this in order by getting rid of tooth decay, cavities, or other dental problems. In other words, visit your dentist on a regular basis. Also brush regularly and you may want to use a tongue scraper.

How is your stomach? You want to make sure you have no stomach or digestive problems. Visit your doctor for an examination if you suspect any problems.

Do you eat healthy? Stop eating junk foods. In addition, when eating healthy foods like garlic or onions… just beware what you’re doing.

How’s your early morning hygiene? Do you use a tongue scraper to scrape off all that nasty bacteria that builds up over night and resides on your tongue. You can use a tongue scraper anytime during the day when necessary. I just find the morning it is especially helpful.

Do you smoke or drink? You should be aware that excessive smoking and drinking helps create bad breath. So cut back and chill for both your health and to control bad breath.

Ever use a spray? You may want to consider finding an all-natural oral spray that helps kill oral bacteria. I find a spray that contains the Manuka honey from New Zealand is especially healthy.

Kiss bad breath good-bye!
