Ideas About High Carbohydrate Diets

Monday
Aug 24, 2009

I read that consuming a diet high in carbohydrates can actually cause you to feel hungry shortly after you consume these so-called healthy foods. Therefore, it can also cause you to eat more calories than your body needs to maintain good levels of energy. So, is this a healthy diet?

All the carbohydrates we consume are converted into glucose, and glucose means that our blood contains levels of sugar in it. Glucose is the thing that gives us energy and this sugar in our blood is not a bad thing for that reason.

But, eating a lot of carbohydrates is not wise, even though it may be a quick energy boost.

Why? Well, carbohydrates start to build up in our systems right away because it takes such a short time to digest them. So the level of glucose in our system rises very quickly, which can be dangerous. And that’s where the danger lies.

The reason this happens is because our pancreas produces insulin to convert the glucose into a form of starch called glycogen and glycogen is then stored in the liver and the muscles. Now, the liver and muscles can only store a certain amount, so if we consume more than what can be stored, the excess glycogen has to be stored as body fat. That’s when we start gaining weight.

Our glucose then returns to a normal level in our blood, but our insulin does. And because the insulin remains at such a high maximum level, it continues to store the glucose in our body’s fat cells. This causes the so-called hunger to come back because the continual pulling out of the glucose in our bloodstream causes the glucose to fall below normal levels, which brings on the hungry feelings, so we tend to eat more.

The more we eat, the more our pancreas has to work overtime to produce the insulin necessary to process the glycogen.
If we continually have a high level of insulin in our blood, it affects it’s ability to work at optimal levels to satiate us and therefore we over-eat. This is the reason it’s dangerous for our health because this is what causes obesity and diabetes, which are both dangerous for our health.

Believe it or not, the solution is to eat fat…that is, eat fat in moderation…in other words, don’t overeat fat, of course, but do not eliminate fat from your diet.

When we eat fat it does not raise glucose, and because fat doesn’t raise the glucose levels in our blood, it can’t raise our insulin levels. It makes sense that

If our insulin levels don’t increase, glucose has no way of being stored as fat in our bodies. Problem solved!
